I have a(n irrational) fear that something like this will befall the vast majority of NA Miatas sometime in the next couple years and make it impossible for me to buy/afford one. This isn't helping.

I don't know if you need to be that afraid of it. They made lots of them.
Okay, maybe you should be worried.

Didn't it kind of already happen? It might be partly a regional thing, but where I'm at, they're way overpriced. Ratty ones sell for like $3k.

They might be starting to appreciate in value, what region are you in? This graph I found on the Hagerty website for the 97s says the prices have been fairly constant, but I'm not sure how reliable that is. As long as I can snag one in good shape for 7-9k in 2-4 years I'll be happy.
I think the odds of that are pretty good, but after watching some of my favorite 80s German classics hit the appreciation curve in the last year or so, I'm a little more wary of coveting an older car I won't be able to buy for a few more years.

South Florida. We have a kind of odd car market here. I can get some things stupid cheap and easily, but other things that are common elsewhere (old bikes especially) are overpriced or hard to find here.

I'm not sure if being in Florida would increase or decrease Miata prices. Surely there'd be plenty of them down there because of the warm weather, but demand for roadsters would be higher there as well.
I'm from Michigan and the ones in my area are usually either summer–only garage queens (that might need some stuff replaced due to infrequent use) or ones that have been well–used or abused (look out for rust). I think the prices are a bit lower in Michigan, probably because they did make/sell a lot of them and I don't think MI's current roadster demand matches what it was in the 90s.

I'll just have to start training myself to like the NB.

I went to look up crashed NB Miatas to be an awful human being, and found a picture of one rolled with blood all over the road. I don't feel like trolling anymore.
